The Background Story of Munca

Munca, an Australian startup, embarked on a mission to assist parents of disabled children in managing government-provided funds. Their innovative app aimed to simplify tracking expenses, managing appointments, and storing invoices, eventually making it easier for parents to report fund usage and secure future funding. However, the journey to achieving this vision was fraught with challenges such as lack of proper tech leadership, strategic misalignment, difficiulty in hiring expert tech team, and poor decison making.

The Challenge

Munca’s founder, a passionate advocate for disability management, faced significant hurdles due to their non-technical background. Despite a clear vision, they struggled with several critical issues:

Plan: Forming the Right Technology Stack & Strategy

6PM began by providing a comprehensive planning phase, crucial for laying a strong foundation for Munca’s technological needs.

A Cofounder CTO for Munca without Sacrificing Equity

6PM provided a fractional CTO, who, along with Product Managers, collaborated closely with Munca to understand and support the startup’s vision of assisting parents of disabled children in managing government-provided funds and technological requirements.

A Scalable Tech Stack

The team identified the appropriate technology stack necessary for Munca’s growth, including Swift over React for its native features, AWS for server hosting, and MongoDB for database management.

A Detailed Product Roadmap:

Conducted extensive market research, including 50 surveys and direct user interviews via phone and Zoom calls, to inform the product strategy.
Mapped the user journey, analyzed customer pain points like usability issues and feature gaps, and defined the MVP strategy, focusing on essential product features and market research to ensure the app met users’ needs effectively.

Scrum Planning:

Set up Jira, created a comprehensive product backlog and epics, and developed sprint backlogs with detailed user stories to prepare the team for development.

Execute: Building & Leading a High-Velocity Remote Team

With a solid plan in place, 6PM moved to the execution phase, focusing on building and leading a high-performing remote team.

Hire High-Performing Developers

Finalized the technology stack, including Swift for iOS development and AWS for scalable cloud solutions. Recruited a high-performing team consisted of 1 backend developer, 2 Swift developers, 1 designer, and 1 tester.
The CTO and Product Managers led the hiring process, ensuring the team’s skills, including Swift programming knowledge, cloud infrastructure expertise, and experience in developing scalable iOS applications, aligned with Munca’s technological needs.

A Scalable Tech Stack

The team identified the appropriate technology stack necessary for Munca’s growth, including Swift over React for its native features, AWS for server hosting, and MongoDB for database management.

Plan the Product Roadmap & Timeline

The CTO, supported by Product Managers, led the engineering process using Agile methodology, focusing on integration related to planning, user account management, and data security.
Developed a detailed six-month timeline for development and deployment, ensuring structured progress and timely delivery of key milestones.

Lead the Engineering Team

The CTO, with Product Managers, led the six-month Agile development process, including 6 sprints, 25 priority meetings, and 32 hours of Scrum meetings, saving over $30,000 through efficient development.

Scrum Team Work

Engaged in design, server setup, ER diagram creation, and writing a 75-page Software Requirements Specification (SRS)
Focused on coding, testing, and pushing the product to the live server, maintaining high standards of quality and performance.
